Barbara Jaffe was born and raised in New York City and makes her home in Greenwich Village.
Her work is in many public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen, Germany, Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland and corporate collections such as IBM and the Sprint Corporation.
For many years she has been drawn to the self-luminous world of the negative print where most of her questions about photography, reality and the eye converge. This special light also describes a space that is strikingly real and yet metaphysical in nature allowing her to create work that is mysterious, psychological and surreal.
Barbara Jaffe has been the recipient of a prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts award as well as a beneficiary of grants from Eastman Kodak and the Polaroid Corporation.
Her photographs have been widely exhibited, most notably at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Roemer Museum in Germany, and the Heckscher Museum, New York.
Jaffe was teaching at Parsons School of Design and Sarah Lawrence College when, in 1995, she was hired to run the Photography Program in the Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History at Hofstra University’s School of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts in New York. She is now Professor Emerita, having retired in 2020.
